Hello, I’m Laura Carter, professional dog trainer, IMDT member, and National Nosework Association Judge. I’ve been working with dogs and their humans for almost 20 years — and one thing I’ve learned is this:
My journey into dog training began when my twins were toddlers (they’re now 19!). I taught puppy classes in the village hall while juggling life as a single mum. My own dog Bear — a lively Jack Russell — often couldn’t get out for long walks. Whether the girls were asleep, poorly, or it was simply too dark, wet or cold outside, I had to find another way.
And that’s when I discovered the real power of games and enrichment at home.
Small daily activities tired Bear out just as much as a walk — and gave us something fun and meaningful to enjoy together. That lesson has shaped my approach ever since.
Over the years I’ve met countless owners who felt guilty if they couldn’t walk their dog as much as they “should.” Dogs recovering from injury. Owners managing illness. High-energy or reactive dogs who found busy places overwhelming. Puppies and seniors who needed something gentler.
One that really stayed with me was Ted, a young German Shepherd who broke his leg at just six months old. He had to spend 23 hours a day in a crate for 8 weeks, and his owners felt completely lost. They wanted to help him — they just didn’t know how.
There was a clear gap in support and education.
So in 2023, I wrote “The Vet Says Rest” — a book that has helped many owners feel less alone when walks aren’t possible. And in 2022, I launched Wags Without Walks — an online membership and supportive community focused on rewarding games, enrichment, scent work and calm connection at home.
And here’s the thing…
Many of the dogs in Wags Without Walks can still go for walks — their humans just love the difference these games make to behaviour, focus, and relaxation.
At home, I still don’t rely on walks every day. Games and activities are a huge part of life for my dogs

In 2023, we moved from Kent to a peaceful spot in rural Scotland. I continue to run Laura Carter Canines, offering training classes and 1-2-1 support.
But my true passion lies right here:
For dogs on rest, reactive dogs, or owners struggling with time, health, weather — you’re not alone.
Quality time builds a stronger bond than any stressful walk ever could..
Simple games and activities help dogs relax, switch off, and feel safe where it matters most.
A happy, tired dog doesn’t always need miles — enrichment can meet their needs beautifully.
